Q4os Linux on Dell 2 in 1 XPS
Since Cent OS 7 was never able to fully support my hardware, and Cent OS 8 doesn't support any of the software I need (see the previous postings), I had to drop CentOS from laptop use. After some research I'm trying out Q4os to see if it can address both the hardware and software requirements. Here are notes on the process...
"Open Source" Mercenaries: Stop Killing the Geese That Laid the Golden Eggs - Before They Become Extinct
In the past 10 years a disturbingly number of "open source" projects are increasingly sabotaging the overall benefits of open source. That is self-defeating, unscalable, and unsustainable. Please learn the history of what it was like before open source and get back on track before you destroy the progress of decades. Here are some suggestions here on a sustainable model that will help you be more successful, less mercenary, more altruistic, and yet also more financially rewarded.
Cent OS 8 Linux on Dell XPS 2-in-1
Recently "upgraded" from Cent OS 7 on my Dell XPS 2 in 1 to Cent OS 8. This has a slew of challenges and differences from similar efforts with other distros. This page will be a capture of my notes.
Open Source, like Plone, becoming too mercenary?
It seems in recent years a number of the "open source" communities have become exponentially mercenary, scaling down the core of products to try to force paid development or add ons. Plone is just one of many examples of this unfortunate trend in the open source community (which I have been a part of since the 1980s)...
Our Top and Ongoing Woes with Odoo
We've been using Odoo back in the OpenERP days, but still struggle with some core problems in the design of this platform. It meets our needs for our various small companies, but there is significant pain associated. Unfortunately we haven't found a better fit over all these years to the feature set we need. Here is a list of the challenges/problems we keep running into spanning Odoo versions 11 through 15 and ongoing...
Apache OFBiz on OpenBSD
Notes on installing Apache's OFBiz on OpenBSD.
Odoo has become too Mercenary. Abandoning Odoo and evaluating alternative replacement options. - Trying ERPNext
Unfortunately the opensource community in the last 10 years is killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The new generation of coders who don't know what it was like before opensource, are shooting themselves in the foot by becoming increasingly mercenary in their opensource approach. We saw this with Plone, and now with Odoo. So now we need to find another alternative, one again.
Discord With Discourse
The people at Discourse.org should be embarrassed, if not downright ashamed, with their product and founder. Do not use the Discourse forum product or services. I can now recommend people instead consider using NodeBB, NOT Discourse.
Increasingly Unmotived, Mercenary, Unethical, and Unaltrustic Global Work Force Culture and the Correlated Poisoning of the Open Source Movement
There has been a very disturbing increase in a trend over the past 5-10 years in the volunteer, paid, and opensource sectors: decreasing worth ethic, lack of motivation, and increasingly severe mercenary and inconsiderate attitudes and behaviors from workers and developers. This trend pre-dates covid. Of course, correlation does not prove causality, but these are some parallel observations.
Unofficial Penpot Manual Installation Guide for Debian 12
Penpot opensource free self-hostable server (Figma clone) does not support manual install. They want everyone to use their SaaS cloud service or if self-hosting, use containerized versions. Here are instructions, from (as they suggested) reverse engineering their Docker setup, for a manual setup on Debian 12. YMMV.
